Here are a few tips that will help you decide if a vehicle isn’t worth wasting your money on.

- Cars that look messy and untidy are usually not looked after very well. Although most used car dealers will put in the effort of making their cars look clean and tidy, some private sellers don’t bother so much. If the owner hasn’t been bothered to clean the car when trying to sell it then this really is a bad sign.

- The tyres on a car can tell you quite a lot about the condition of the rest of the car and how well it has been looked after. It is very unlikely that the rest of the car has been cared for if the thread on the tyres is barely legal. If the person cannot take care of the most important part of the car then what are the chances that they have looked after any other part of it.

- Check the bodywork carefully for any signs of repair. Even a small dent, or area of the car where the paint looks touched up, could indicate much larger problems hidden underneath.

- If you are not very good with cars then you might want to bring a mechanic along with you as this person will be in a much better position to assess the car.

- Make sure you take the vehicle for a test drive and assess how it performs on different terrain.
