The shows presenters went undercover and had no problem finding dodgy motors for sale. The amount of people complaining over the last few years about dodgy used cars that they have bought has risen quite dramatically. So if you are thinking of buying a second hand vehicle, then this information should help to convince you of the need to be cautious. The following are some of the ways that you can avoid ending up with a dodgy used vehicle.

- You have to make sure that there is no evidence of tampering with the documentation of the car. Make sure that you are familiar with what genuine documentation looks like before trying to inspect any documents.

- Take down the VIN (vehicle identification number) to make sure that it has not been reported as stolen. This is something that can be easily checked online these days. You also need to make sure that the VIN on the actual car has not been meddled with.

- Look for any signs that the car has been repaired; things like small differences in the paintwork. If you can see evidence of an accident and the seller tries to deny this just walk away.

- If the odometer on the car is indicating a small number of miles but the car looks quite worn, then you should be suspicious.

- It is not a good idea to buy a car from anyone that you cannot verify; make sure the person is who they say they are. There should be no problem with you asking to see some form of identification. Never allow a private seller to bring a car to you to view; you want to see where they live or their place of business that way you know who they are if there are any problems.
