It is widely thought that the carbon emissions that transport causes is having a major influence on the climate change that seems to be taking place on our planet. Ways of cutting these emissions are being investigated by international governments, with scientists attempting to discover new technologies that could make travel more environmentally friendly.

When the time comes for you to compare car insurance, you may choose your next new car largely on the basis of environmentally friendly technology. So, which new technologies should motorists take a look at?

Hybrid vehicles Hybrid cars involve the use of at least two different systems for propulsion – for example, an electric motor and an engine that is driven by fuel. Hybrid cars can use alternative fuels, petrol or diesel, and typically offer much better economy than traditional cars in addition to producing extremely low emissions . Normal cars are still usually cheaper to buy, but the extra expense of a hybrid vehicle is likely to be offset in the long run by fuel cost savings.

Alternative fuels Biofuels are available now and have seen use in all vehicles. They are a blend of petrol and diesel and as much as 5% biofuel; this could allow you to save considerably on CO2 emissions compared to fossil fuels. ‘Flexi-fuel’ vehicles are produced by various manufacturers and these are able to be fuelled by a blend of 15% petrol and up to 85% bioethanol, and there looks set to be an increase in the number of such vehicles in future .

Electric cars Rather than just learning how to compare car insurance for a better deal, motorists might also be able to get their hands on electric cars in the future to save money. It is said to be highly cost-effective to run electric cars compared to cars that run on conventional fuel, and zero localised carbon emissions are produced by them. There is presently a necessity to charge electric cars on a regular basis either at a charging station or at home, which is not readily supported by current infrastructures. Manufacturers are now attempting to produce electric cars that are just as convenient to refuel as diesel and petrol models, all of which makes vehicles powered by electricity well worth watching for future years.
