Since I was thinking about buying new car, I decided to pick his brain to find out the best method to get a good price. Some of the things he told me were amazing. And how, I’d like to share them with you.

Rule number one is to always check online first. There are plenty of websites that offer the dealers true costs for pretty much any car out there. Don’t even bother with sticker price, just figure you can get it for the dealers cost plus a couple percent.

Another good idea is to take your time. One thing car salesman hate is somebody that takes their sweet time looking at car after car. They would rather move on to the next customer so they can make some money. So if you go slow, they’ll likely give you a great deal just to get rid of you.

Shopping during the middle of the week is also a great idea, particularly in the morning. You’ll likely be the only customer on the lot, and people will be dying to make a sale that day.

One thing a friend of mine taught me was to only negotiate the price of the car. Car sales people usually like to focus on monthly payments, because it hides things like interest and cost. Focus only on the bottom line.

One tip that will save you tons of money is to get our own financing. Never finance through the dealer, unless you have a credit score above 700. Even then, it’s best to get a loan through your own bank first, as you will likely get much better terms.
