The Seven Deadly Sins of Car Insurance
Here’s a firmly tongue-in-cheek look at the seven deadly sins, and how they might be costing you in car insurance premiums.
Pride
If you’ve spent a lot of money on your car, whether it was bought new or not, then it’s probably one of your most treasured possessions, your pride and joy. When applying for car insurance though, you will likely be asked by the insurer for the value of your car. Pride might make you over-value your motor, and this won’t do your premium any favours. When assessing the value of your car, don’t give insurers the cost of the car when you bought it, because it will have depreciated in value. On the other hand, don’t give them the price you would hope to sell it for, because pride in your car probably clouds your judgement of its actual worth. Some price comparison sites will give you a more accurate estimation of your car’s worth when you put in the registration number. Be prepared though, as it may hurt your pride!
Gluttony
In a literal sense, gluttony relates to over-indulgence and over-or-unnecessary consumption. With car insurance premiums rising this year, it makes sense to save money wherever you can. When it comes to motoring, some of us are a little over-indulgent – choosing to use the car for a short journey which could easily be walked, and unnecessarily using fuel. If you want to off-set the rising cost of insurance, make savings on fuel by leaving the car at home, where possible.
Lust:
According to the results of a recent poll of 3000 motorists, carried out by UK insurer Diamond, two-fifths of drivers flirt with other drivers whilst behind the wheel. Worse still, the results showed that 15% admitted to having crashed their car or had a near-miss on the roads after being distracted by someone they found attractive.
Anger
Anger clouds judgment and detrimentally affects concentration, but for some of us it is an unavoidable part of driving. It is easy for the red mist to start gathering when someone cuts you up on a roundabout, or on a motorway, but it is important to keep your cool so that the other driver’s mistake doesn’t put your safety in jeopardy.
Greed
Lying about claims, convictions and a slew of other details in order to get a cheaper policy and save some money is a bad idea, but it continues to happen within the industry. By abusing price-comparisons websites such as moneysupermarket car insurance UK drivers are able to judge what claims affect their premiums the most. Commenting on the AA British Insurance Premium Index for the second quarter of this year, Douglas said people using the sites were being “economical with the truth” to save money.
Sloth:
Laziness can be detrimental to your car insurance premium, because if you are too lazy to look around for a better deal, you could be paying over-the-odds. Take the initiative and find out if there is a better deal out there for you. Even if you’re not particularly lazy, car insurance comparison websites like take a lot of work out of getting a quote. Equally, don’t be lazy and stop your search there – as not all insurers can be found on these sites. Direct Line; for example, are not found on price-comparison sites.
Envy:
Hearing about how much cheaper other people’s insurance is than your own might make you feel jealous. Instead of being envious, why not find out which insurer they are with, what their policy entails and how they got the quote. You might find some tips which will help to lower your own premiums.
