Secrets About Bullet Proof Glass
The term bullet proof glass is actually a misnomer. It is because it is impossible to proof glass in true sense against bullets. Hence, in industry it is known as bullet resistant rather than proof. No matter by what name you call it, it is indeed a very fascinating subject of study.
There tend to be two types. The first of these uses laminated glass which is layered one on top of the other with an ethylene-vinyl or polyurethane bonding agent. The second utilizes a material called polycarbonate thermoplastic as the bonding agent.
The bullet resistant laminate has been widely used since the Second World War. Over this time, it has proven very effective, but being very heavy and thick, (anything from four inches to eight inches), it is not ideal for some applications where agility and speed are of the utmost importance.
More commonly used is the second option, especially with the needs of a modern world. The thermoplastic applications allow energy to pass through evenly and uniformly. This protects the surface, and is less likely to penetrate. This may not work if the firing distance is close, or from a direct shot.
The effectiveness is increased manifold when combined with layers of glass. Although it is shattered, the bullet, in turn, also becomes flat and gets deformed. This results in the energy being spread out evenly which in turn makes the polycarbonate layer able to deflect it. Increasing the number of layers increases the number of strikes that it can tolerate.
These protective glasses have been in use for a long time and have proved to be very effective. They have been used extensively on armoured trucks which are used to carry money and other valuable items. They are also used on vehicles which are employed for carrying Heads of State.
In many cases, it has been found that even minor celebrities are using this on their cars. This may be entirely due to their pretensions however, though some may have justification. Many dictators have also been found using this protective shield. This is again due to inflated egos, and the likelihood of attack by there own people.
A constantly evolving technology, working to reduce the weight and the effectiveness as a priority, the development industry of bullet proof glass is a vibrant one. Much of this is funded by military projects the world over.
There are many developments on the horizon for effective bullet proof glass manufacture. Testing is being done on lighter alloys and layer options which will revolutionize the technology. At present, these tests are being done even on airplanes.
