Cars get so technologically advanced in our generation that sometimes it is hard to fix them yourself. One very tricky fix for your car is the muffler. For fixing your older car models you can still go with your neighborhood car mechanic, but for newer ones, it is not advisable to do so. Old car models can be repaired easily by your neighborhood mechanic. This guide will provide you some assistance in repairing mufflers by yourself.

It is imperative that you utilize a lift so that it will provide you with enough space to be able to work under your car. The best equipment is actually a drive through lift. You need to check the entry of the muffler to see if there is a flange or a clamp on it. If you find none then you have to replace the exhaust pipe as far as it goes to the next connection. If there is a clamp on the inlet pipe and muffler connection, try to determine the condition of the pipe at that connection.

You can select from two basic types of inlet pipes and these are either the hop-over type or the hop-under pipe which is like an intermediate pipe which goes all the way ip to the catalytic converter conjunction. Some flange applications require careful inspections on both ends because you will be cutting with a torch so you need to be careful not to compromise the next connecting flange. Ideally, you have already made sure that you have the materials for these parts because you have either planned it perfectly, or have anticipated it with ease.

You need to put some penetrating oil on the exhaust clamp so that you will be able to loosen them with ease. You then have to use a ratchet socket so that you will be able to remove the exhaust clamps from the muffler itself and disconnect it from the hangers. After taking the mufflers uses a mallet and hammer the area a bit to loosen up any rust buildup. You then secure your new muffler back and clamp it back up and make sure the hangers are in place.

There you have a quick guide on you will be able to change mufflers on older car models. You can do this yourself or have your neighborhood mechanic to replace it for you. But bear in mind that it is not advisable that you do repairs or either replacements on newer car models. You need to take your car back to the car manufacturer in order to have them repair it for you.
