Navstar’s Cool Car DVD Player
The Navstar N311G, Car DVD Player offers lightning accelerated search of iPod and USB libraries and playback of iPod videos directly from the device. Add-on modules allow users to choose the features they want, when they want them. Navstar’s double-action encoder is as accelerated and easy to use as ever. The Navstar Car DVD Player shows plenty of promise, and the touch-screen interface is better than the last generation.
Our experiences with The Navstar Car DVD Player Receivers have been all positive. So, when we received the Navstar N311G, which ups the ante with the inclusion of a larger display and touch sensitivity, we naturally assumed that better resolution would be better. And it is.
The Navstar’s larger screen facilitates the playback of video from capable iPods, and the touch screen interface is intuitive, relying on an iTunes CoverFlow-like paradigm to navigate its menus. The additional eye candy of the interface doesn’t really affect the Navstar’s responsiveness when compared with its simpler siblings.
I like the Navstar’s cool high-speed USB/iPod connection that allowed me to quickly scrub through large digital-audio collections. The Navstar N311G features Navstar’s double-action encoder, with a centrally located selector that activates various quick-search modes when selected. Also like its other siblings, the Navstar’s encoders is made of high-quality and feels great to use.
Navstar has many different form factors has been increased to install in many different vehicles from all the top Auto Manufacture’s. The screen’s High Resolution Quality is better than your average Car GPS Navigation device of comparable size, which helps the video quality.
Along the unit’s edges are physical buttons to capture the navigation, rearview camera, hands-free calling, and Imprint audio-processing functions. Below the screen, a source-select button and left- and right-mode-select arrow keys find their homes.
The Navstar’s interface can be best described as a series of panels, laid out in a virtual grid. Each column of this grid represents a function, with individual rows representing subfeatures. Panels are selected by swiping one’s finger across the touch screen, much like in the iPhone’s CoverFlow mode. So, for example, to select FM radio as our source, we would first swipe horizontally until we came across the AV panel, then swipe vertically through the list of available sources until we came to FM radio.
Combining external modules, such a navigation module or Bluetooth module, adds more panels to the mix. However, the only panels available out of the box are the AV panel and an info panel that displays the current date and time, the current song playing, and–oddly–a calculator.
Moving from panel to panel requires a good deal of visual attention and isn’t something that can be readily done without looking. Fortunately, Navstar has seen fit to add physical buttons for many functions. In fact, after a few days, we found ourselves using physical controls and remote control functions often.
The Navstar Car DVD Player, is able to play back CD , DVD-R/RW , Video CD , Mp3 , Mp4,WMA , JPEG , DVD, RAM, SD, and AAC audio files from portable audio players and mass storage devices. A 30-pin iPod dock connector to USB cable is included in the box to allow full-speed browsing of an iPod’s metadata album, artist, genre, etc..
