Learning MIG welding techniques

When I started figuring out exactly how to mig welding i had no idea which place to go for info on the correct approaches to create a attractive weld bead (stack of dimes, mig like a tig etc..)

Thankfully ive learned allot from extremely affluent welder/fabricators and also have been employed in leading Off Road fabrication & suspensions companies over my many years as a fabricator.

Below i will make an attempt to save you some time and a ton of the energy which i underwent to get where i am currently and i hope maneuver you in the correct path to acquiring that “PerfectMig weld.”

You will find definitely numerous tips to have that perfect mig welding technique or “stack o dimes” or “Mig like a Tig” but before we get started out we’ve got a couple techniques we ought to go over.

MIG Welder Tuning

Initially your going to have to set the settings on your own mig welder. I would personally utilize the settings inside the hood within your mig welder as a general guideline. Some mig welders you will be able to use the door configuration settings. in the 2 photographs beneath i have applied the stock miller configuration settings. If not and the configurations are way to Warm or getting a “V” formation i then would definitely.

-Start by lowering your wire speed.

-if that doesn’t help reduce the configurations down to the next lowest setting in the panel.

-If still nothing at all your going to have to proceed fine tuning by lowering the welders wire speed first then the volts and repeat that technique untel i obtain a nice consistent sharp “Frying Bacon” tone. along with a nice rounded bead stack.

One particular tactic i use that works great is:

-Drag the mig welder in close proximity to the area your mig welding, so you can get your hands on the adjustment switches when welding.

-Get the welders settings close to your liking.

-Then when your mig welding on a piece of scrap little by little spin the wire speed knob up or down till you achieve the “Frying Bacon”sound and a nice looking weld bead.

I mentioned earlier that i had been utilising the stock miller 250 mig welder settings, witch works very well in cretin applications and joints. But some not so well, at least in the applications im using it for. In the image below i was using the stock miller setting, for 3/16″ in order to show you what it looks like when you try and weld a corner joint. I attempted to make the weld appear decent. but ended up applying the stock setting for 16 gauge.

In my personal experience each welder has unique adjustments to acquire that “sweet spot” EX: i use a miller 210 all the time and have the welder settings memorized. and at my buddies shop i end up using entirely unique settings on his particular miller 210. im not really positive precisely why but ether way i think its better if you use the techniques I explained above.

If you switch to a completely different wire size you will have to switch the settings to get back to the original “sweet spot”
