The pistons must burn all of the fuel or else the residue fuel will be eliminated through the exhaust pipe and increase air emissions.

If the vehicle has been running on low octane fuel do not change to high octane fuel before the emissions testing because the vehicle will produce more exhaust and the vehicle will not pass certification. Older vehicles are not required to pass certification testing. Vehicles produced before 1971 do not have to be certified by an emissions testing center because modern diagnostic equipment cannot accurately detect older vehicle emission levels.

Some people use a fuel injector cleaning solution before they take their car in for the emissions testing. The injector cleaner is supposed to remove injector residue. Some people believe that the vehicle will have a better chance of passing if the injectors are clean.

Some people pour a fuel treatment product into the gas tank one week before the emissions testing because the fuel treatment is supposed to clean the entire engine including the carburetor. If one is going to use this product it is best to first fill the tank to full before adding the fuel cleaner. The product costs between ten and fifteen dollars.

Some people believe that the smog test in San Ramon is a waste of time and money. Others believe that the emissions test is responsible for helping to keep the environment cleaner. Regardless of who is right or who is wrong the fact remains that most cars must pass an emissions certification process before the vehicle can be licensed and registered.
