Gas Prices On The Rise & American Consumers Seek Solutions
When gasoline prices shot up to a whopping $.50 per gallon in 1974 the American public was outraged. By 1984 people were paying $1.25 a gallon at the pump and still grumbling about it. In 1997 gas prices hit $2.00 a gallon and our gas guzzling society began screaming for more fuel efficient vehicles. Now that gas prices are hovering around $3.50 a gallon and increases in the months to come will easily hit the $4.00 mark people are seriously reconsidering their methods of transportation.
Now that hostility has increased in Libya, oil and consequent gasoline prices will continue to escalate. However, Americans can take comfort in the knowledge that U.S. fuel subsidies are still providing a buffer at the pump. In contrast, our neighbors across the pond are shelling out around $9.00 per gallon for European petrol. This is something to keep in mind the next time you pay between $50 and $75 for a full tank of gas.
The American market for hybrid and fuel efficient cars has grown by leaps and bounds. Many dealers across the nation are reporting that they are selling out of popular models like the Ford Fusion and the Chevy Volt. As well, pre-orders and reservations for new cars have increased dramatically. U.S. auto manufacturers are working hard to re-invent the wheel (and most other car parts too) when it comes to fuel efficiency. As demand increases the supply for innovative new vehicles will become crucial. At Ford Motor Company engineers are experimenting with new technology to infuse the molded plastic parts, used in Ford vehicles, with minute air bubbles. The end result is expected to reduce vehicle weight by between 250 – 750 pounds. Of course, lighter cars require less fuel and will produce higher overall MPGs.
As people begin to search for alternatives to traditional transportation many are purchasing two wheel vehicles for around town travel. Motorcycle, moped and scooter dealers are experiencing a recent boom in business. The savings at the pump can be significant for two wheel vehicle owners. Even the largest Harley Davidson can travel 50 miles before needing to stop to refuel. Mopeds and the ultra popular Vespas can make an entire tank of gas last for up to 70 miles. As enticing as the freedom of the road may seem, there are drawbacks, specifically the weather. In less than mild climates two wheel vehicles only offer a part time solution. Somehow hopping on the back of your “Hog” and running to the grocery store for milk does not sound as appealing when the temperature drops below 30 degrees. But, for those who live in warmer climates getting around on two wheels could be a fun and economical solution.
