When you are looking to buy a car like so many others you won’t have the services of a qualified mechanic to inspect the car before you do. In most cases when buying a used car we often trust our own instincts. However if you are someone who has never made such a purchase before how can you be sure that the car being sold to you is good. Below we show you five things to look for when buying a car that is second hand.

It is important before you even purchase the car that you take it out for a test drive so you can then see if there are any real problems with it. As you drive the vehicle see how smoothly you can change gears, also see how well it stops when you brake and what strange noises are being made. If you notice changing gears is difficult then there are several reasons for it the main one of these could be fluid leaking from the gear box. Also when you brake and notice that the car isn’t reacting as it should then either the brakes need replacing or there isn’t enough brake fluid.

Another thing to be looking at carefully is the title history that should come with the car. If the person is not able to provide this documentation with the car then you are best just walking away from the sale. But if you are really interested in the car then why not contact the motor vehicle department in the state you live to see if they can provide you with copies of it instead.

Another one of the five things to look for when buying a car before you actually go to inspect the car and take it out for a test drive is to find out more about its history. There are several companies in the USA today such as mycarcheck who when you provide them with the cars VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) can find out more about its history, whether it has been stolen or written off.

When you are inspecting the car look carefully at the mileage on the odometer. Certainly on older vehicles there is a way in which this can be altered quite easily. Should you notice any inconsistencies relating to the car mileage then of course you need to find out why. There could be a very simple explanation for this one being that the seller had to have the engine replaced. But if they are unable to offer an explanation for this discrepancy then don’t purchase the car.

Item 5

The last of the five things to look for when buying a car concerns whether the vehicle has passed a Smog test or not recently. If the vehicle hasn’t been tested recently with regards to emissions then it is worth your while spending $50 on having this particular test carried out. If you buy a vehicle and then take it for the vehicle emissions test and it fails you of course will have to foot the bill in order to get the problem rectified. By spending such a small amount could end up saving you thousands of dollars.
