Can Hydrogen Cars Help Beat the Raise In Gasoline Prices?
The recent increase in gas prices has many people looking for alternative means of transportation. These increases have motivated a lot of people to demand alternative forms of transportation would break current human dependence on an economy based on petroleum.
With the pressure to find alternative forms of transportation, researchers have been forced to look for alternative fuel sources to power the vehicles of tomorrow. Using hydrogen to run our cars is one of the most appealing ideas. Very soon hydrogen cars will a main source of energy in our cars.
Using hydrogen as the primary on-board source of power in cars is a relatively new idea. A hydrogen car unlike conventional vehicles uses a different type of engine to make the vehicle move. There are two different ways that hydrogen can be used.
The first type of hydrogen car is powered by burning hydrogen as a fuel, similar to what happens with a gasoline engine. A traditional gasoline engine is modified to burn hydrogen either as its only source of fuel or in conjunction with gasoline. In both engines the process is generally the same, the force of burning hydrogen provides the mechanical power to make the car move.
Hydrogen powered cars provide the noticeable benefit in that they provide a cleaner fuel source for power. The results is that using hydrogen as a fuel releases fewer polluting substances and chemicals into the atmosphere. Actually the hydrogen car idea has been studied because researchers have been looking for cleaner alternative fuel source to be used to replace crude oil in the future. Hydrogen fits the bill very nicely.
The hydrogen fuel cell is being developed as a second way of powering cars instead of using modified internal combustion engine. Hydrogen is used in a fuel cell to generate electrical power that is used to power the car’s electric motors. A fuel call produces no pollution and thus avoids any emission unlike a car using a hydrogen modified internal combustion engine.
Even though hydrogen fuel cells are seen as the best power source to power hydrogen cars of the future, fuel cells face several obstacles. First, making hydrogen fuel cells is very expensive using current technology. Also hydrogen fuel cells are very sensitive and fragile to vibrations and sudden movements. Engineers are tying to develop a hydrogen fuel cell that will be strong enough to withstand the frequent bumps and vibrations that are normal when traveling by car. Second, there needs to be a better and cheaper technology to build hydrogen fuel cells that will make them affordable to consumers.
Despite the technical challenges confronting the development of the the hydrogen car, its future still remains bright. The fact that hydrogen is a renewable energy source makes hydrogen cars very attractive. This is unlike fossil fuels which will become scarcer and will result in even higher gasoline prices. Hydrogen cars are a logical alternative to a world that needs to move away for its dependence on fossil fuels
