Buying Window Tint

Our film is 2-Ply High Performance, scratch resistant, dyed film. The right window tint film makes all the difference in your DIY project. 2-Ply film is 1.5 mil thick and is the proper film to use on your DIY window tint project. Inexperienced DIYers should always choose 2-Ply film due to its increased rigidity and lower likelihood of ripping or wrinkling.

To make the best buying decision you first need to know and understand the various choices that window tint sellers have available to them. There are aspects of window tint film that can be mixed and matched in order to achieve the quality and cost we are looking for.

* Thickness: Window tint comes in 1-ply and 2-ply thicknesses. The very low prices that you find on venues such as eBay are made possible by the use of very low quality 1-Ply window tint film. This stuff is difficult to work with because it tears and wrinkles easily, but costs nearly half of what 2-ply film costs.

* Dyed film -vs- dyed adhesive: Dyed film is highly preferred because the film itself is manufactured with the pigmentation. The color is permanent and won’t run when wet. Dyed adhesive is used in most very low price window tint products. Color pigment is added to the liquid adhesive. When you apply your water solution and reactivate the adhesive, the color begins to run and streak. You have very little time to get this film applied to the window because the color begins to run and streak. You can imagine how much more difficult this becomes when the film is 1-ply with dyed adhesive. When you hear about complaints of window tint film cracking, peeling, and turning purple, it is usually 1-Ply dyed adhesive film.

* Scratch resistance: Not all window tint film is scratch resistant, but is important if you plan to roll your windows up and down every once in a while.

* Metallic -vs- non-metallic: While metallic is a bit of an upgrade, some people prefer non-metallic tint. There is a school of thought that says metalized film may interfere with GPS and cell phone signals. This depends on the wireless device, more so than the tint film. A good way to test if the film will interfere with your device is to wrap the device in a scrap of the metalized film. If you still see reception bars you won’t have any problem. As an example I wrapped my Blackberry in no less than two layers of metalized 2-Ply film and only noticed loss of one reception bar.
