It might have been the fiftieth state, but Alaska may be first when it comes to apprenticeships. Not only is Alaska a different type of state, when it comes to mechanic apprenticeships, it might be the very best state!
It helps if you know some basic info on Alaska. Not only is it the coldest state, it’s also the biggest state within the U.S. If you get a map and measure it out, it’s actually as wide as the rest of the U.S put together. Because of Alaska’s severe weather conditions, there have been many recent reality shows depicting unique aspects of the state! What people don’t often understand is that Alaska is also house to the busiest shipping airport within the world, a few of the greatest forrests, and a booming oil and construction industry!
Skilled tradesmen and apprentices are needed in every one of those fields. No wonder Alaska’s apprenitceship is one of the top in the country! The Alaska DOL actually has dozens of sites specifically geared towards people who want apprenticeships! Not only that, but Alaska is unique because of how close their state government works with unions along with other associations to promote trade and apprenticeship opportunities.
Alaska has so many training programs there are almost too numerous to list! From millwrights to operators, from cement masons to teamsters, the list just goes on and on. In fact, the Apprenticeship Training Coordinators Association boasts over 17 training programs that are conducive of apprenticeships!
Finally, Alaska has some opportunities that are unique to the state. In addition to everything else you can think of, Alaska also has a weatherization training program! It only makes sense right? Think about what happens to machinery when the temperatures fall to minus 30 for two or three months? All of this equipment needs to be maintained and protected from the elements. Thus if you’re looking for adventure, great state sponsored on the job training programs, and a change of scenery and more, give Alaska a try. So many opportunities and so few people who know about it, maybe it’s for you.
